Someone somewhere recommended this to me. Or maybe they just mentioned they were reading it and liked it. I generally love Richard Peck, but only read recommendations because he scarred me for life when I was a teenager with his book ARE YOU IN THE HOUSE ALONE? and so I don’t trust him. Don’t read that book, even if you like scary things. It’s not just scary, it’s icky.
But do read THE RIVER BETWEEN US. It’s a great read. And historically very interesting. I liked it a lot. It’s not as hilarious as some of his other books (although it has its moments), but it’s a meatier subject than those too and its handled deftly, gracefully, and beautifully.
Joelle, now I must read ARE YOU IN THE HOUSE ALONE?, just because you said not to. I really, really liked THE RIVER BETWEEN US, too. Have you tried A YEAR DOWN YONDER? I think you would loke it.
