Tonight, the last show will be played at The Roxy Theatre. To the world, it’s just a small, fifty-seat theatre, on a tiny island, in the middle of nowhere, but for islanders, it has been a hub of music, laughter, film, family, culture, live talks, performance art, romance, birthday parties, hockey finals, fundraising, and community for the last five years.
My husband has played quite a few gigs there since we first came to the island, and on our sixth wedding anniversary, Steve, the owner, and dear friend, let us have it all to ourselves so we could eat a candlelight dinner and watch a movie for two on the giant screen.
Below is a video of my husband, Victor Anthony, and fiddler Sarah Tradewell (and me). You’ve probably seen it before, but it’s one of the few times I stood in front of the crowd, and I’m followed by some great music, so here it is.
Steve, we will miss seeing you behind that desk at the Roxy, but we wish you well.
At least you have lots of lovely memories.
