In the book, Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert talks about a button or badge you can buy at the gift shop of the ashram to wear when you’re trying not to talk and it says, “I am in silence.”
Last night, my husband played and sang five songs at a benefit for Chilean fishermen and their families who lost their boats and their livelihood in the recent earthquake. Because they were raising money for boats, he thought he should learn a few new boat songs and last week, he practiced them so much he strained his voice and had to go on vocal rest for two days. All’s well that ends well and he performed fabulously and hopefully they raised a lot of money!
However, as he walked around for two days, either writing me notes or simply nodding or shaking his head, it got me thinking about silence. And book promotion. I try really hard not to cross that line between publicity and downright obnoxiousness, but I think that in all my excitement, I have pushed a toe over the line here and there. So, for this week. I am in silence (at least about my book). Unless, of course, something really cool happens. No, wait…see I’m not very good at this, but I will try.
Is there some topic that perhaps you should be “in silence” about this week?
is there any way that I can find this “I am in silence” badge? I would love to get a couple of them
Hi,
I just saw the movie over the weekend and began looking around for the “I Am In Silence” badge & came across your post. I will likely end up making a few for our household for whenever one of us feels like being quiet.
Wishing you a wonder-full today, Sarah
What a cool idea. I read Eat, Pray, Love, but I must’ve skimmed this part. 😉 I know what I’m going to be in silence about this week. Thanks, Joelle, for another great post.
Is there a version of this plan where no one talks to me?
