- What were your favorite books when you were a teen? The Catcher in the Rye, Lord of the Flies, East of Eden. I read a lot of Lois Duncan, Ellen Conford, and Paul Zindel. And I loved a couple of books that don’t seem to be widely known now: The Unchosen by Nan Gilbert, and The Room by Ruth Holland.
- What’s on your iPod or CD player? REM, Kelly Joe Phelps, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Waits, Beethoven, Chopin, and Kodo, among others. I like a lot of different stuff. I listened mostly to Tom Waits and Fleetwood Mac while writing The Secret Year.
- Do you eat right, get plenty of exercise, and sleep eight hours, or do you sit in front of your computer writing all the time? I walk at least a mile every day, more when I don’t have to go to my day job. But I don’t get enough sleep. I’m a night owl in a day person’s world, and I’m always playing catch-up.
- Do you use an outline when writing, or just let it flow and write as fast as you can? The first draft, I mostly let it flow. I use a very simple, sketchy road map, but usually deviate from it. In later drafts, I often use an outline to organize the scenes.
- What are you reading now? At the time of answering these questions: Psych Major Syndrome; Writers [on Writing], Volume 2; and Leaving Gee’s Bend.
- What author or book have you recently discovered that you want the world to know about? I haven’t been able to shut up about Peter Cameron’s Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You since I first read it. I’ve even bought copies to give away on my blog.
- Are you a sports fan? Who’s your team? My favorite spectator sport is tennis. I especially love watching Nadal and Federer play. I also watch the Olympics—in fact, the first TV I bought as an adult, I bought so I could watch the Olympics. And my husband has gotten me into watching the Tour de France. Otherwise, I’ll catch the occasional Eagles or Phillies game.
