your right Joelle but thats kinda the sad part people cant see boys carrying around Princess Diaries:( and yah some covers really turn me away from books but others really make me want to read it. Thank you wanda there is hope left for us.:) I personally like a book with more action in it but some books i like and they have not much action more math stuff tied in with the story.
Well, it just goes to show you what I know…I guess my instincts hold true for my own generation but not necessarily for yours, Will. I’m glad to hear the news, really. That is so encouraging! I’m heartened to know that some boys would not cringe to read a book that appears to be for girls. And I agree with Joelle that publishers ought to be more aware.
I can’t really see a boy carrying around a Princess Diaries book, but that’s not to say guys might not find them really funny. Hard to say. Unlike many of the diary books, they are pretty well written.
Will, I think you’re right that it goes both ways. Many girls do choose books by the cover. In fact, I think most people do to a certain extent. I gave my husband a book called ROUND THE BEND by Nevil Shute. It’s a fabulous story that takes place in the Middle East and also in the Far East. The cover has a girl in a skimpy sarong type thing (very pulp fiction type of cover) and he didn’t want to read it because of that. I hadn’t even noticed the cover because I’d read the book with a plain black cover. He did read it anyway, and it’s one of his all time favorite books, but sometimes publishers don’t do themselves any favors.
I am one of the kids from the grade seven class and some of us believed the same as you Wanda but others believed that it depended on the boys and girls, like some girls will only pick up like romance novels and stuff and some boys would be willing and ready for something like Princess Diaries!
My instinct says that it is more true for boys than for girls. I can’t imagine a boy picking up a novel that looks too girly-pink-sweet, but a girl would be very willing to pick up a book that has a masculine look. I’ll be curious to hear what your Grade 7 kids have to say!
