Events & Workshops

Gabriola Writers Social – Friday, November 17th, 7-9pm

Are you a writer of any kind? Fiction, nonfiction, poetry, songs, plays, articles, novels, anything I haven’t thought of? Would you like to meet other writers here on the island? Come to the first ever Gabriola Writers Social hosted by Joëlle Anthony. From professionals to aspiring, from dabblers to determined, everyone is welcome. This is not a class, workshop or critique group (although, if you meet others who want to start other groups, great!)…it’s really just a party for writers to get to know each other! Bring a snack/drink to share if you’re so inclined. Spouses/partners/significant others are welcome, but they probably get plenty of writing talk at home already, so feel free to leave them there let them stay home and come alone!

FREE (donations accepted to cover costs for this, or future socials, but seriously, I want everyone to come who wants to come, so don’t feel like you have to donate), Arts & Heritage Centre, 7-9pm, November 17th

Word on the Lake Writer’s Festival – Salmon Arm, BC

I’m very excited to be joining the other fantastic presenters at this festival. I’ll be teaching a workshop called Writing with Sensory Detail, which is always a lot of fun, doing some blue pencil sessions, and even performing a bit of my original work on Saturday evening before the main act, Victor Anthony takes the stage. And yes, the main act does have the same last name as me…because it’s my husband in concert! I hope to see you there!

April 10th, 2016

Isle of the Arts Festival

I’ll be sitting on a panel all about creativity and what gets artists motivated.

Jan-Feb 2016

Creative Writing with Joëlle Anthony

For the first time on the island, I’m offering the workshops I teach regularly at writers conferences and literary festivals in the US and Canada. Writing should be fun and in this series of 6 workshops, I will give you tools to make creating fiction a joyful experience. Perfect for beginning writers, while still offering useful insights to those of you with more experience. Learn how to build interesting characters, start the flow of ideas, and tap into the sights and sounds in the world around you to enrich your writing. While the focus will be on fiction, nonfiction writers are more than welcome and I think will find plenty for them, too. For more details on what the workshops will cover, click here.

When: Mondays 1-2pm, January 11-February 22, 2016

(no class Feb 1)

Where: The Women’s Institute

This class is full. If you want to be put on my mailing list for future classes, please email me: workshops @ joelleanthony.com or use the contact page on this site

August 2014

Willamette Writer’s Conference – Portland OR

August 1st-3rd, 2014

True to Teens; dialogue in YA Fiction – It’s challenging enough to create realistic teen characters, but in the ever changing world of today’s young readers, how do you write dialogue that rings true? In this workshop, Joëlle Anthony covers writing dialogue that sounds believable and authentic, language trends, texting, profanity, and how to use these types of dialogue for maximum effect. We’ll try our hand at writing exercises designed to tighten your dialogue, and discuss whether there are lines that shouldn’t be crossed or if it’s a free-for-all in YA literature these days. TBA

The Final Polish: You’ve finally finished a draft of your novel and you’re ready to start querying. Or you’ve written something fabulous, but it’s twenty thousand words longer than it should be and you don’t know what to do. In this workshop, Joëlle Anthony will take you through that final pass before sending your manuscript out into the world. She’ll give you tips for shortening and tightening your story, making dialogue snap, digging out the clichés, and more. Once you’ve applied these final polish techniques, your manuscript will shine, raising you above the rest who are in too much of a hurry to do this important step. TBA

I will also be available to critique manuscripts. Arrangements need to be made through Willamette Writers, but you may request me. YA, Fiction, Memoir – no fantasy or horror. Please see their site for more information on the conference and critiques.
