Wild Card Wednesday – Fave Fifteen 2009

December 30th, 2009 by Joelle

trophy

Time for my annual Fave Fifteen book list. This list is created from the books I read this year (not when they were published). I did not do a very thorough job of recording all the books I read, in fact, I only wrote down 108, but I think I read more like 125 all the way through. This year, I was much more selective and probably started 30 books that I did not finish – reading as few as twenty pages and more than a hundred in some of them before quitting. The list is in a random order – well, actually, probably in the order I read them- and the criteria for making the list is simply “books that I enjoyed”. Some of them are light, others heavier, others in between. There’s literature, mysteries, light fiction…it’s all pretty much just whatever struck my fancy. So here goes:

Fave Fifteen YA & MG 2009

Braless in Wonderland – Debbie Reed Fischer

The Loser’s Guide to Life and Love – A.E. Cannon

The Musician’s Daughter – Susanne Dunlap

Flipped – Wendelin Van Draanen

Sticks – Joan Bauer

Fortune’s Magic Farm – Suzanne Selfors

Audrey Wait! – Robin Benway

Dramarama – E. Lockhart

After – Amy Efaw

Cashing In – Susan Colback

Tango – The Tale of an Island Dog – Eileen Beha

Perfect You – Elizabeth Scott

The Nature of Jade – Deb Caletti

When You Reach Me* – Rebecca Stead

The Giant-Slayer – Iain Lawrence

Fave Five – Adult Fiction

After You – Julie Buxbaum

The Guernesy Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society – Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows

The School of Essential Ingredients – Erica Bauermeister

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night – Mark Haddon

Real Life & Liars – Kristina Riggle

And last but not least, from the ARCs I’ve been lucky enough to readFuture Five in 2010

The Secret Year – Jennifer R. Hubbard

The Witchy Worries of Abbie Adams – Rhonda Hayter

Secret Saturdays – Torrey Maldonado

The Timekeeper’s Moon (a sequel to The Farwalker’s Quest) – Joni Sensel

Dirty Little Secrets – C. J. Omololu

*When You Reach Me is wonderful, but contains spoilers for A Wrinkle In Time, so if you haven’t read it, read that one first. I’ll refrain from ranting about how annoying I find that because it really is a great book.

Publishing & the Environment

December 28th, 2009 by Joelle

Apr08 010I know that publishing can’t be good for the environment. Book production alone takes a lot of trees, transportation, and other tolls. Heck, just the amount of bubble envelopes and manuscript pages I receive each year makes me a little sick to my stomach.*  I am not exactly sure how to balance my career choices with my tree-hugger instincts. However, I have made my choice to go after writing books as a vocation and for now, I’m just going to have to deal with the environmental impact in other ways.

My husband and I are always looking for ways to reduce our personal carbon footprint, no matter how small the actual impact of our actions. For example, we now eat most meals by candlelight. Romantic and easier on the environment! Even though we live on a small island and can walk, ride or (safely) hitch-hike most places we want to go, we find ourselves driving more than we should. So…for the month of January…with you as our witnesses…we are parking the truck. Short of a medical emergency, we will not drive it in the month of January. We figure if we can do this for the coldest month of the year, then we will be able to remember that and choose alternate transportation much more often in the coming months.

Anyone care to join us and park your car for January? Oh, come on! It’ll be fun!

*Penguin is starting to do their part by implementing electronic copy-editing! Yay, Penguin!

Finally Friday – 25 December

December 25th, 2009 by Joelle

Penguin SummerI’m over at The Debutante Ball today, talking about one of my most valuable gifts, and I pass it on to you to try on for size too.

The winner of the fabulous novel, Real Life & Liars, by Kristina Riggle, is Alicia! If you didn’t win, you can’t blame it on my husband after all, as I did the drawing this week myself. Congrats, Alicia! I’m sure you’ll love it. I know I did.

In Restoring Harmony news, it’s the kind that excites the author, but doesn’t really mean much to the rest of the world…but FedEx brought the new Penguin Catalogue yesterday (the thumbnail is the cover), and there is my book on page 120 (pg. 122 of the PDF though)! Very heady stuff – for me anyway.

And for those of you who just haven’t had enough Christmas music, here’s one more song. My husband’s original (and only) Christmas song. Yep, that’s him singing and playing uke. Nothing says Christmas like the ukulele.

It’s Christmas Time Again – MP3

Wild Card Wednesday 23 December

December 23rd, 2009 by Joelle

dead-man-s_~D_Mn_H_CIf you’ve been dropping by on Wednesdays, you know I’ve ben doing some fantastic author interviews lately. I’m so excited by all these great authors sharing bits and pieces with us each week (and the free books!) and I hope you’re enjoying them too.

While I don’t actually celebrate Christmas, I know a lot of you do, and so I figured that this must be a very busy week for you and so there won’t be an author interview today. Honestly, I have some great ones coming up and I didn’t want to post any of them today in case y’all missed it!

I really try not to read blogs because reading on the internet makes my eyes go wonky, but I started to read this wonderful piece by Merry Montelone over at Moonrat’s blog and I got sucked right into it and read it to the end. So instead of an author interview over here today, I urge you to go check this piece out. You won’t be sorry. On Friday, I’ll announce the winner of Kristina Riggle’s fine book, Real Life & Liars.

Uncle Ralph’s Farmer’s Almanac

December 21st, 2009 by Joelle

Last Friday I was over at The Debs talking about the dedication in my first book, Restoring Harmony (I like saying “first” book as if you might get it confused with my “second” book that my agent just sold – the one that’s not even completely written yet! Haha!).

Anyway, there’s another sort of “hidden” dedication in the book too, and today is the day to tell you about it. My main character, Molly, comes from a farm and while I think the line got cut from the final book, at one time she said, “My grandparents were farmers, my parents are farmers, and my brothers and sister and I will end up being farmers.” and this is something she’s proud of.

I wanted to create a concrete way for the reader to know what the date is in the book, and so I came up with the idea of Molly carrying her father’s farmer’s almanac with her and each time the date changes (not each chapter), I head it with words of wisdom from this almanac. In publishing, there’s a little thing called “Rights” which means that you can’t just use pieces of wisdom from existing almanacs without paying for it. Publishers are not that excited about authors who ask them to do this, so they in turn tell you that you can pay for the rights, or you can make something up. I chose the latter.

I created a totally fictional almanac called Uncle Ralph’s Farmer’s Almanac. Throughout the book, there are little snippets of advice from Uncle Ralph. Those I did not make up. Those are sayings I heard in the South when we lived there, or that I took directly from our friend Ralph, a sixth generation farmer in Tennessee.

Over two years ago, Ralph was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gherig’s disease). Last Friday afternoon, he passed on. He never saw his name in my book, but he has two lovely daughters and I hope that some day, they will see the tribute I paid to their father – a great friend, a wonderful man, and a farmer.

You will be missed, Farmer Ralph.

Uncle Ralph

Finally Friday – 18 December

December 18th, 2009 by Joelle

JRT Who’s this handsome guy, you ask? Well…One of my favourite things to read when cracking open a book is the dedication. Drop on over to The Debutante Ball where I talk about the dedication I wrote for Restoring Harmony.

And speaking of Debs, scroll down a bit and read a fab interview with past Deb, Kristina Riggle. Don’t forget to enter to win her fantastic book, Real Life & Liars! You have until next Tuesday, midnight Pacific time to enter.

Not a lot of news this week. I’m mostly just plugging along on my next book The Right & the Real. I’m getting close to a first draft! Yay. Thanks to my cheerleaders, Alexa, Kim, & Eileen for sending on those messages when I was struggling this week.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

P.S. My trip to Vancouver to visit Eileen and bookstores got postponed because of snow, which is why I’m not regaling you all with my fun times there.

Wild Card Wednesday – an interview with Kristina Riggle

December 16th, 2009 by Joelle

KR Kristina Riggle is a past Deb over at The Debutante Ball, which is how I first came across her. Lucky me, I won her wonderful book, Real Life & Liars, when it came out! And now you too can win it (not my copy, she inscribed it to me! Your very own copy). All you have to do is leave a comment or send me a message through the contact page saying you wanna win by midnight Tuesday, December 23, and it could be yours. I’ll hold a very official drawing (husband pulls name out of hat) next week and announce the winner on December 25th. It will be like a bonus Christmas gift!

real life

  • What were your favorite books when you were a teen?
  • I read almost everything I could find by Madeline L’Engle and S.E. Hinton, and I AM THE CHEESE by Robert Cormier left me stunned. I also read mysteries a lot back then, Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot books were favorites. I read Christopher Pike’s young adult thrillers, Stephen King, and Tom Clancy. I also read my favorite novel ever, CATCH-22, in high school. Eclectic, no?
  • What are your hobbies that don’t have to do with writing?
  • I am a latecomer to amateur theater. I have been in exactly two shows (I was Miriam in “The Women” by Clare Booth Luce, in which I got to be part of an on-stage catfight and smoke fake cigarettes, and a singing, dancing 1960s secretary in the chorus of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”. I think theater is a natural extension of my love of writing. They’re both a form of “Let’s Pretend.” I really want to be in another show but I need a lot more practice in dancing. Anyone wanna teach me?
  • What’s the riskiest thing you ever did and how did it work out for you?
  • Quitting my “day job” as a newspaper reporter to stay home with my baby son, freelance for the same paper part-time, and oh yeah, write. That was almost seven years ago and my publisher has just signed me up for the third and fourth books. So far, so good.
  • Where do you see yourself in ten years?
  • When I started working as a reporter I never would have dreamed I’d walk away from it seven years later. So, I’ve learned not to try and imagine that far ahead. It’s impossible to know what’s coming. I just hope it’s good!
  • Are you a sports fan? Who’s your team?
  • I am! I’m a fan of the Detroit Red Wings and Michigan State University football. I love hockey and I’ve been a Spartan football fan since I was walking, pretty much. My mother-in-law is also educating me about baseball, so I follow the Tigers, too. I love the vicarious thrill of cheering on a team, plus it’s one area of my life where I’m utterly unreasonable and unabashedly biased. It’s a relief to be so simplistic about something while the rest of life is so complicated.
  • Do you speak any foreign languages?
  • I speak a little Italian! In college I flunked the Spanish placement test despite having aced two years of high school Spanish, so rather than start over I signed up for Italian, which is such a pretty language. I think I was the only one in the class without Italian ancestry (that I know of.) I had a chance to study abroad in Italy and stupidly passed it up. But my husband and I went for our anniversary in 2000, which was an amazing trip, so it all worked out. All because I flunked Spanish placement!
  • What’s the coolest writing-thing that’s happened to you since you sold your first book?
  • My main character has breast cancer, and confesses to her best friend that she’s been blowing off her mammograms. I had a woman at my book launch tell me that she read that scene and immediately scheduled her own long-neglected mammogram. I was stunned and so gratified that my book moved someone in that way.

Thanks Kristina! It’s great to have you here. And I can hardly wait for the next books, even if I’m not supposed to think ahead. Oh, and just for the record, after reading Kristina’s first book, I was so moved by it that I generously offered to plot out the sequel for her because it left me with such strong feelings that I just knew what was coming. For some reason, authors never take me up on those kinds of offers (I have a great idea for J.K. Rowling too, but she doesn’t return my phone calls). Anyway, Kristina politely answered the other questions I’d asked in my emails to her, and wisely totally ignored my offer of an outline. Haha! Still…I know what happens after Real Life & Liars, if you want to know. Just kidding!

Going, going, gone…

December 14th, 2009 by Joelle

no impactI had a great topic for today. I’d written the post in my head…but alas, it has totally flown the coop. I have no clue what words of wisdom I’d planned to impart. So…instead, I’ll share something that happened over the weekend.

My husband and I went to see a documentary called No Impact Man. It’s a movie about a guy in New York City, and his family, who set out to leave no impact on the world for one year. While there is an element of hype to it (he was writing a book – great platform!), it’s also an amazing, hilarious, informative, and inspiring movie. His wife is so funny! The movie left me with more questions than answers, but it also got us thinking about what else we can do to be more active in the “smaller-footprint” lifestyle we claim to live.

We’ve already made one BIG pledge for next year, so check back in January to find out what it is! Have you seen this movie? Watch the trailer, and tell me what you think. I’ve put the book on hold at the library, so it will be interesting to read about their year in more detail.

Finally Friday! December 11, 09

December 11th, 2009 by Joelle

First, I want to thank everyone who entered to win Jennifer R. Hubbard’s THE SECRET YEAR. You all begged so prettily, but in the end, only one name could be drawn out of the Cubs hat (if you didn’t win, I’ll give you my husband’s email and you can take it up with him as he’s the one who drew). The winner is Catherine! Congratulations, and it’s already on its way to you.

I am over at The Debutante Ball today, explaining Writer Research Terms for y’all. Don’t miss it!

In other news, did I mention my agent sold my second book? Oh, I did? Oh, well. It’s my blog and I’ll celebrate if I want to!

tote bagIn real news you may not know, The Bookologist has started another fab contest over on her blog. She has eighteen prizes to distribute to three winners! And some of them are very cool prizes…ever wanted your own Restoring Harmony Tote Bag? Well, it probably never crossed your mind, but you could win one over there! She’s got a new fresh look to the blog too – much easier to read!

You’re probably all wondering about the treadmill desk. I know I said I would have pictures or a video last Monday, but then MY AGENT SOLD MY SECOND BOOK, I mean, I had other news. Maybe next week? I’ve walked approximately 12 miles and written about 20 new pages this week though, so I’m feeling great about it!

Next week, I’m off to Vancouver for a couple of days to visit the always fun and hilarious Eileen Cook (pre-order her book here!), but never fear, I’ve got a fantastic author interview and another book giveaway scheduled for Wednesday (a published book, not just an ARC). Have a great weekend, everyone!

Wild Card Wednesday – An interview with Julie Buxbaum

December 9th, 2009 by Joelle

julie buxbaumI have nothing against women’s fiction or contemporary fiction, but it doesn’t cross my path that often, so I don’t read a lot of it. However, a while ago, I read Julie’s book The Opposite of Love and immediately fell in love with her writing. When I saw she had another book out, I snapped it up. It’s called After You and I adored it just as much. She writes beautifully, tenderly, and her words grab you. I was so excited when she agreed to do this interview. And thanks to the internet, I didn’t have to travel to London where she lives (although, I wouldn’t have minded!).

  1. What do you read in the bathroom?

I am a big believer in bathroom reading. Old New Yorkers have a way of accumulating on the back of my toilet, as do essay collections, and,  occasionally short stories.  For me, bathroom reading is reserved for those things you can pick up and savor in small pieces.  And I tend to like to learn while “I’m on the bog” as my British husband would say.  That way, I feel like I’m multi-tasking.

  1. Do you eat right, get plenty of exercise, and sleep eight hours, or do you sit in front of your computer writing all the time?

Hah!  Neither, unfortunately.  I am not nearly as disciplined as I should be, so some days I do eat right, exercise, sleep my allotted eight hours, but most of the time, I scramble to hit just one of the three.  Nor do I find myself in front of my computer writing all the time either.  I am a terrible time waster—I spend too much time on the internet, too much time watching television, too much time chatting on the phone.  Not enough doing what makes me function best—eating well, sleeping, exercising, and yes, writing too.

  1. What’s the riskiest thing you ever did and how did it work out for you?

I guess the riskiest thing I’ve ever done is quitting my job as a lawyer to try my hand at being a novelist, when I had absolutely no experience writing at all, and all logic said that I was crazy to give up a stable career with health insurance.  Turned out to be the best decision I ever made.

  1. Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Funny I was just thinking about this a few weeks ago.  My husband and I just celebrated nine years together, and it got me thinking that when we first met, I never would have imagined I’d be living the life I am living now, nine years later.  So, I can’t even venture to guess what the next decade will bring.  With AFTER YOU, I was really interested in exploring what happens when we meet our adult selves and they don’t necessarily match our expectations, which is something everyone goes through at some point.  But I guess that’s what makes life exciting.  I’m not sure I would want to know where I’ll be in ten years.

  1. I gave you twenty questions and asked you to answer seven. Were you tempted to answer all twenty? Why?

I read and thought about all twenty, and yeah, I was definitely tempted to answer all of them, particularly because they are fun and interesting questions.  But sadly my laziness won out.  It often does.

  1. What’s the most embarrassing thing that happened to you in high school?

Ahh, I blush just thinking about high school.  Too many embarrassing moments to share here.  Let’s just say I’m glad I finally outgrew both the perm and the acne.

  1. What are you reading now?

Zadie Smith’s new collection of essays, “Changing My Mind.”  I have a huge writer crush on her, and I’m really enjoying the opportunity to take a peek inside her brain.  The collection makes me feel like we are having a chat over coffee; so far, the pieces are funny, insightful, and perfectly precise, much like her fiction.  The book is only increasing my admiration.

  1. What author or book have you recently discovered that you want the world to know about?

I recently read Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead, and was blown away.  She’s a literary genius, and everyone should take the time to savor her work.  It’s a bit slow going, but that’s exactly the point.  It’s like eating a delicious bit of artisan chocolate—you are supposed to go slow, and enjoy each nibble.  I’m also a big fan of Richard Powers, who has this bizarre background in both literature and physics, which makes his work a particularly interesting right brain-left brain experience. He always challenges me and makes me think, and I’m not sure you can ask for much more than that.

  1. Do you know how to cook? What’s your specialty?

Nope.  I am terrible cook, but a fabulous eater.  It’s really a tragic combination.

  1. What’s the coolest writing-thing that’s happened to you since you sold your first book?

The film rights to THE OPPOSITE OF LOVE were bought by Twentieth Century Fox, and Anne Hathaway has signed on to star in the leading role.  I still haven’t quite gotten over the thrill and the shock of it all.  It’s so exciting to imagine my novel being turned into a movie, and I couldn’t have picked a better or more appropriate actress for the character of Emily.  It’s literally a dream come true.

  1. Go on, give us some writing advice. You know you want to!

Read, read, read.  Seriously, read everything and anything you can get your hands on, and read widely and critically.  I think there is no better way to learn how to write than to put in the time with a book in your hands.  In the bathroom or otherwise.

Joelle here – Wow! Someone who tells you to read if you want to write. Where have I heard that before? Oh, yes, Julie, you’re preaching to the choir as my Southern husband would say. Read a bit about AFTER YOU here. I bet you’ll want to read the whole book.

P.S. For those of you who I told there would be another giveaway this week, I got my dates mixed up. But there will be one next week!

Wild Card Wednesday – an interview with Jennifer R. Hubbard

December 2nd, 2009 by Joelle

SecretYear.Cvr7-175x264SORRY, THIS CONTEST IS CLOSED! WINNER ANNOUNCED FRIDAY 11 DECEMBER 09.

Jennifer R. Hubbard lives and writes near Philadelphia. The Secret Year is her first novel.

After his secret girlfriend’s death, seventeen-year-old Colt finds the notebook she left behind, but he is unprepared for the truths he discovers about their intense relationship.

Visit Jennifer’s website at http://www.jenniferhubbard.com and her blog at http://writerjenn.livejournal.com

  1. What were your favorite books when you were a teen? The Catcher in the Rye, Lord of the Flies, East of Eden. I read a lot of Lois Duncan, Ellen Conford, and Paul Zindel. And I loved a couple of books that don’t seem to be widely known now: The Unchosen by Nan Gilbert, and The Room by Ruth Holland.
  2. What’s on your iPod or CD player? REM, Kelly Joe Phelps, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Waits, Beethoven, Chopin, and Kodo, among others. I like a lot of different stuff. I listened mostly to Tom Waits and Fleetwood Mac while writing The Secret Year.
  3. Do you eat right, get plenty of exercise, and sleep eight hours, or do you sit in front of your computer writing all the time? I walk at least a mile every day, more when I don’t have to go to my day job.  But I don’t get enough sleep.  I’m a night owl in a day person’s world, and I’m always playing catch-up.
  4. Do you use an outline when writing, or just let it flow and write as fast as you can? The first draft, I mostly let it flow. I use a very simple, sketchy road map, but usually deviate from it. In later drafts, I often use an outline to organize the scenes.
  5. What are you reading now? At the time of answering these questions: Psych Major Syndrome; Writers [on Writing], Volume 2; and Leaving Gee’s Bend.
  6. What author or book have you recently discovered that you want the world to know about? I haven’t been able to shut up about Peter Cameron’s Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You since I first read it. I’ve even bought copies to give away on my blog.
  7. Are you a sports fan? Who’s your team? My favorite spectator sport is tennis. I especially love watching Nadal and Federer play. I also watch the Olympics—in fact, the first TV I bought as an adult, I bought so I could watch the Olympics. And my husband has gotten me into watching the Tour de France. Otherwise, I’ll catch the occasional Eagles or Phillies game.

Now my turn: I was lucky enough to get my hands on The Secret Year and let me just tell you any hype or great things you’ve heard about it are ALL TRUE! Trust me, you want to read this book. And because you are all such faithful blog readers, here is your chance to win my ARC! All you have to do is leave a comment or send me an email through the contact page that says, “Pick me!” or something to that effect. I will accept entries until Tuesday, December 8th. So what are you waiting for? You definitely want this book!
